Whether you are expecting a boy or a girl, you probably want to put together a baby room which is going to welcome your baby in the sweetest possible way.

Or maybe you dislike those typical “kid’s room” arrangements in pink or blue. In both cases, you can create an eclectic, DIY modern nursery and save money in the process.

Even if you have a little girl, by using gender-neutral wall colors, you are setting the stage for the future boy, who will feel there like at home. A good approach is to paint the whole room mauve or bland yellow. It leaves you options for adding accented pieces like adding this lovely paired set of orchid armchairs.

It will definitely be the piece that draws attention and makes the rest of the room three-dimensional. Sometimes by just matching the chandelier shade with dark wenge-wood floor, makes a stunning effect, while the ceiling and walls remained white.

Try to get the bigger neutral color pieces of furniture first, so you can easily accent them later. What any nursery most certainly needs is a crib, and a comfortable rocking chair. These two pieces will always be observed as complementary, so having them in matching colors or wood textures really makes up for it.

They should be accompanied by a natural fiber area rug, like this simple but chic white and grey striped one. When accessorizing with colors, keep in mind to not lean the scheme towards too girly or too boyish, as that will ruin everything. Walk the fine line between pink, orchid, turquoise and gold. In addition of being extremely useful in storing you little one’s stuff, plastic crates come in many colors and can fit any color scheme.

The Accessories

Now this may be the hard part, bit it largely depends how used you are to trawling thrift stores and browsing for online auction and sales. The whole idea of having an eclectic nursery is to have a combination of styles, and that the uniqueness comes from a multiple sources. While doing this you may want to skip buying what is popular now, because as you child grows, its bedroom décor will inevitably go out of date.

It is impossible to keep up with trends, so instead of investing in a new set of Disney wallpapers every season, go with the basics and invest that money in quality wood, steel and leather furniture that will last for years to come.

Finding the perfect accessories that will bring life to the room without having to spend a fortune isn’t easy. However, there is one theme that never gets out of date – the animal kingdom. Children love animals and learn about new things by identifying with their characteristics, which is important for developing imaginative processes.

Skip the expected and instead of a horse, get a fluffy rocking elephant or a dolphin, and give your child a beautiful memory for a lifetime.

The room design you will eventually end up with is more artistic, loaded with mid-century furniture, funky accessories, and abstract art. The idea behind this approach is to create a space that will be a room as much for you as it is for your little one.
