With the growing global population, it seems like space is getting smaller and smaller. Especially with the popularity and convenience of city life for many, we are living in a cramped world where it can cost a fortune just to get a tiny living space.

Nonetheless, there’s no reason why a small space shouldn’t feel like an airy haven and a respite from daily hustle and bustle. In particular, your living room shouldn’t feel like a minuscule corner that can accommodate no more than a couple of bodies. Designers have learned to adapt to this new, tight environment, and they’ve come up with the following tricks for making a small living room look larger.

1. Less is more. Many people get small pieces of furniture to make it seem like the room can hold more stuff. But this tactic doesn’t necessarily fool your guests. Rather, designers recommend decorating the room with large pieces in limited quantity—a properly-sized couch, an end table, perhaps a tall display cabinet or an interesting piece of artwork. Having fewer—and not smaller—pieces makes the space look airier and brighter, adding to the illusion of space. To maximize space further, it’s best to go for furniture that can do “double duty,” such as end tables with integrated drawers for storage, couches with hidden storage room, and “smart” TVs that can serve as giant photo frames.

2. It’s all in the arrangement. Some people shove all of the furniture in a corner in the hopes that it will free up more space in the middle of the room. It actually has the opposite effect of pointing out the smallness of the area. Instead, position your furniture strategically and don’t be afraid to spaces in between pieces of furniture—it gives off the perception that you have a lot of space to work with.

3. Go with flow. Use different shades of the same color in painting the room to make the different elements flow together better and make the space cohesive. Light colors are advisable because they look brighter and make a room feel bigger, so creams and blues are usually a safe bet. This design tactic can even be enhanced with wall-to-wall carpeting; if you’re worried about keeping carpets clean, companies such as Carpet Cleaning Melbourne are just a phone call away.

4. Blend, blend, blend. Instead making each room in your place a separate space, make the entire area feel like one big room through the use of archways and by limiting the number of doors. This trick allows one room to flow seamlessly into another. To make this trick work, though, the color scheme throughout your place must be monochromatic. You can even make doors part of the flow by keeping their design and color in line with the overall look.

5. Open up. The presence of natural light automatically makes a room look bigger because it highlights available space. Thus, designers recommend enlarging windows to let more natural light in. Or if you can’t control their size, have more windows built in. In blocking the heat of the day, use light-colored curtains made of light material. You can even opt for clear furniture, such as glass-topped tables, to add to this brightening effect.

6. Mirror, mirror on the wall. The use of mirrors is among the easiest ways to enlarge a room because they play on optical illusions. They reflect available light and the surrounding space to make a room brighter and to “double” a space. Many designers recommend putting a panel of mirrors across one wall to widen a room, but even strategically positioned small mirrors can do the trick. We just wouldn’t recommend watching a horror movie by yourself in this space.

7. Legs are your pick. Go for raised furniture, such as couches with a little of leg, taller tables, and high chairs (no, not the ones for children). The light that can pass through the spaces at the bottom make the room seem airier and roomier. Not to mention, it’ll definitely ease the burden of cleaning under these pieces of furniture.

8. Put up patterns. Even if you have a monochromatic color scheme going on, there’s always the freedom to spice up the walls with prints that can contribute to enlarging a space. Vertical lines on a wall elongate a room, horizontal lines widen it, and large tiles can make floors look bigger.
When designing for a small living room, minimalism, not miniaturizing, is the key. It’s about maximizing the space you have and letting the light in.
