This is a guest post from Kate Flannery from HighStylife.

If you are planning or already expecting a baby, you have probably come up with several neat ideas for decorating your baby’s room. If you do not know or do not want to know the gender of your baby, you could consider using neutral details in decoration.

Modern kid’s rooms do not have to be gender defined. Interior designers are breaking gender stereotypes by decorating baby rooms in genderless styles. In the past, it was tradition to decorate girl’s rooms in pink or red details because those are the colors that are traditionally related to girls and women. Rooms for baby boys were usually decorated with blue or green details.

Fun fact: the division of blue and pink clothes is very, very new, and a fascinating topic.

Why would you let the color of their room define your child? Instead, you can try some of these neutral, modern and stylish decorating ideas.

Wooden Details And A Chalkboard Wall

If you want your baby’s room to be gender neutral, you can consider wood as the main element. It is neutral in color and healthier than plastic – so long as it is coated with a non-toxic layer to prevent chipped surfaces and injuries. Add some wooden details such as a wooden miniature kiddie table and wooden kid’s toys to the room to complete the aesthetic.
You can also have a wonderful wooden rocking horse that your baby can play with in a year or two. Top everything with a giant chalkboard placed on a wall – decoration to see your child through the entirety of its childhood. You can write nursery rimes or let your child draw on the board for a really trendy wall art moment.

Grey And White Stripes

Complete this wallpaper color combo with a crib, chair and wardrobe in white. The complete ambient is very neutral, peaceful, and calming, but it can be brightened up with a bright burst of a single color, repeated throughout the room.
Yellow has always been a good complementary color to grey. Set the walls with wide grey and white horizontal stripes for a modern and fun look. If pops of color are not your thing, and grey nurseries look a bit depressing, add a pastel mural on the closet door.

Bold And Bright

If you want to add plenty of color in your baby’s room, but you also want to keep it tame, consider using multicolored details and toys, but keep the walls white, or some really light pastel.
A combination of green, yellow or red used for a crib, shelves and even plant pots along with white walls will be modern and stylish, and a great way to raise an outdoorsy baby.

Minty Green

Mint Green Has Been A Popular Neutral Color For The Past Few Seasons, And It Works Wonders In Many Different Styles – Urban, Vintage, Shabby Chic… The Combination Of This Color And Yellow Is A Solid Choice.

It Can Be Mixed With Black And White Details As Far As Furniture Is Concerned, But Too Much Of This Color Combination Can Make The Room Seem A Bit Cold. Make Some Bold Designs On The Walls To Really Bring The Colors Out.

Scandinavian Style

Scandinavian style is really popular. It is a minimalist approach to design with a lot of organic wooden details. The most prominent colors are black and white, and the occasional grey.

Scandinavian interior design has been a massive inspiration for houses in general, but it can be a little difficult to pass the starkness of the layout into a kid’s room without making them seem gloomy. The key to a doze of warmth here is the subtle involvement of shabby chic, another all-white style.

Interested parents can try to find a way to incorporate shabby chic into the Scandinavian minimalism without making it too obvious. This is truly more a decorative challenge than a fixed idea of what a kid’s room should look like.
